Osaka to Kyoto by Train: JR, Hankyu, Keihan or Shinkansen

Osaka to Kyoto by train compared: JR Special Rapid, Hankyu, Keihan and the shinkansen, with times, fares, passes and which suits your Kyoto hotel area.

How it's made

Four railways run between Osaka and Kyoto, and any of them works in the other direction too. The JR Special Rapid takes 28 minutes and costs ¥580. Hankyu’s weekend Kyo-train Garaku takes 43 minutes, and Keihan’s limited express takes 48 to 54. The shinkansen costs more than twice the JR fare. Which one you want depends mostly on where your Kyoto hotel is.

JR Special Rapid

The simplest option, and the one most people mean when they say the train from Osaka to Kyoto. The Special Rapid Service (shin-kaisoku) runs from Osaka Station through Shin-Osaka and Takatsuki to Kyoto Station. JR West’s timetable has one Saturday run leaving Kyoto at 12:15, reaching Shin-Osaka at 12:38 and Osaka at 12:43. The fare is ¥580 from either Osaka or Shin-Osaka, according to JR West’s March 2026 fare book.

Make sure the train says Special Rapid, as JR West’s Rapid and Local trains are separate services. If your hotel isn’t at the station, the Kyoto transport tips cover the subway and buses.

Passes. JR West’s Kansai Area Pass covers the Special Rapid, but its page says sales ended on 30 September 2026. The Kansai WIDE Area Pass covers the Special Rapid too, and the Sanyo Shinkansen as far as Okayama, but not the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo. The Japan Rail Pass page says pass holders can’t use the Nozomi or Mizuho shinkansen.

Hankyu

Hankyu’s Kyoto Line runs from Osaka-umeda to Kyoto-kawaramachi, with Katsura, Karasuma and Kawaramachi as its stops in Kyoto. Hankyu’s weekday timetable from Umeda shows a train every 10 minutes through the day, though it says special schedules such as tourist-season ones may differ. The running time of the regular limited express isn’t printed on a page that could be read for this guide, so check the timetable.

Hankyu’s fare search needs a browser script, and the fare isn’t printed on any page that could be read for this guide, so check it on Hankyu’s site before you go.

On weekends and holidays the Kyo-train Garaku runs four trips a day from Umeda (9:32, 11:32, 13:32 and 15:32 in the timetable read), arriving in Kawaramachi 43 minutes later, with no charge beyond the normal fare. Its stops are Juso, Awaji, Katsura, Karasuma and Kawaramachi.

Hankyu is the one to take if you’re staying round Kawaramachi or Shijo-Karasuma, since it stops at Kawaramachi and Karasuma. See Kawaramachi and Shijo-Karasuma.

Passes. The ONE KANSAI Kyoto Enjoy 3-way Pass costs ¥1,800 for adults and covers Hankyu from Osaka-umeda to Kyoto-kawaramachi, Keihan from Yodoyabashi to Demachiyanagi, and JR West from Osaka to Kyoto. Hankyu also lists a Kyoto Line 1-Day Pass, a coupon that comes with JR West’s Kansai Area Pass rather than a ticket sold on its own.

Keihan

Keihan’s Main Line runs from Yodoyabashi in Osaka to Demachiyanagi in northern Kyoto, with Gion-Shijo on the way. The limited express takes about 54 minutes to Demachiyanagi and about 48 to Gion-Shijo from Yodoyabashi. On weekday daytimes the Yodoyabashi to Demachiyanagi limited express runs roughly every 12 minutes. Trains from Kitahama leave a minute after Yodoyabashi, and the fare from Kitahama to Gion-Shijo is the same ¥490.

Fares from Yodoyabashi are ¥490 to Gion-Shijo and ¥550 to Demachiyanagi, on Keihan’s table of 1 October 2025. The Premium Car costs extra on top, ¥500 from Yodoyabashi to Demachiyanagi. It’s the sixth car from the Kyoto end, and you buy a separate ticket for it.

Gion-Shijo sits at the east end of the Shijo Ohashi bridge, so it’s the one for Gion. Demachiyanagi is the other end of the run.

Passes. Keihan’s Kyoto-Osaka Sightseeing Pass 1day is ¥2,160 and covers the Keihan Main Line, Osaka Metro and Osaka City Bus. Pass holders still buy a Premium Car ticket to use it.

The shinkansen

Shin-Osaka to Kyoto by shinkansen is a short hop, and it costs more than twice what the JR Special Rapid does. On smartEX’s April 2025 price list, a reserved seat is ¥2,880 on the Nozomi and ¥2,670 on the Hikari or Kodama, and a non-reserved seat on the Hikari or Kodama is ¥1,450. The times aren’t printed on a page that could be read for this guide, so check the timetable for the train you want.

It only makes sense when you’re already on the shinkansen, for instance arriving at Shin-Osaka from Tokyo with your ticket in hand. The Japan Rail Pass page tells pass holders to use the Hikari, Sakura, Kodama and Tsubame trains, not the Nozomi.
