Airport to Kyoto: Kansai Airport and Itami Options
Kansai Airport to Kyoto takes about 80 minutes on the JR Haruka, or 85 to 100 by limousine bus (¥2,800). Fares, times and Itami options from the operators.
From Kansai International Airport (KIX), the JR Haruka limited express runs direct to Kyoto Station in about 80 minutes. The airport limousine bus takes about 85 to 90 minutes to Kyoto Station for ¥2,800, and a Nankai and subway route to the Kawaramachi side takes about 110. From Osaka Itami Airport, the limousine bus takes about 50 to 55 minutes. Fares below were read on the operators’ pages in October 2026, and the Haruka price changes on 1 November.
Options from Kansai Airport (KIX)
| Option | Arrives at | Time | Fare |

JR Haruka
The Haruka is the direct train. The Kyoto City Tourism Association says direct trains to Kyoto take approximately 80 minutes, and lists it as the fast, comfortable choice for anyone who wants no transfers. It arrives at Kyoto Station.
The fare has two parts. JR-West says a normal ticket needs both the train fare and a separate express fare. The page that prices that combination couldn’t be read for this guide, so you’ll need to check it on JR-West’s site.
What was read is JR-West’s HARUKA One-way Ticket, a discounted ticket for visitors from overseas. For Kansai Airport to Kyoto it costs ¥2,200 for adults (¥1,100 for children) if sold through 31 October 2026, and ¥2,700 for adults (¥1,350 for children) if sold from 1 November 2026. The price depends on the day you buy, not the day you ride. You need a passport issued by a foreign government and must be entering Japan as a temporary visitor. You buy it online or as an exchange order from a travel agency outside Japan, then collect it in Japan. JR-West says it isn’t sold within Japan.
The ticket covers a reserved seat in the dedicated cars, and a non-reserved seat if those are full. It doesn’t cover the Shinkansen.
Airport limousine bus
The Kansai Airport Transportation Enterprise runs buses between the airport and Kyoto Station’s Hachijo-guchi side. Its timetable page gives about 1 hour 25 to 30 minutes from Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi to Terminal 1, and the fare is ¥2,800 for adults and ¥1,400 for children one way. A round trip is ¥5,100, valid for 14 consecutive days from first use. The Kyoto City Tourism Association puts the journey at about 100 minutes and calls it the cheap option that carries your luggage.

Buses to the airport need a reservation. For the exact stop at each terminal and the booking steps, use the operator’s timetable.
Rapi:t and subway to the Kawaramachi side
Nankai’s Rapi:t runs from the airport to Tengachaya, then the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line goes to Awaji for the Hankyu Kyoto Line (to Kyoto-Kawaramachi) or to Kitahama for a Keihan train to Gion-Shijo. The tourism association says either takes about 110 minutes, and suggests it for people heading to downtown Kyoto who want to skip Kyoto Station’s crowds. Fares weren’t readable from the operators’ pages, so it’s worth checking them before you go. The same stations feature in Osaka to Kyoto by train.

From Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)
Two options are listed by the tourism association:
- Airport limousine bus to Kyoto Station and some hotels, about 50 to 55 minutes.
- Osaka Monorail and Hankyu Kyoto Line to Karasuma or Kyoto-Kawaramachi, about 60 minutes (around 30 on each leg, changing at Minami-Ibaraki), listed as the cheaper option.
The bus fare and timetable weren’t readable from the operator’s pages, so check the Osaka Airport Transport site. Hankyu’s Kyoto Line is also the train in Osaka to Kyoto.
Which one
- Staying near Kyoto Station, or just want the fewest changes: the Haruka or the limousine bus.
- Staying in Kawaramachi, Shijo-Karasuma or Gion: the Nankai and subway route, or from Itami the monorail and Hankyu, and read the stations in where to stay in Kyoto.
- Lots of luggage: the limousine bus, since the bags ride with you.
- Don’t want to carry bags in town: Kyoto travel tips covers sending your suitcase to a hotel.
