Francois opened in 1934 in a lane by the Takase canal just south of Shijo, a salon-style coffee house its owner Tateno Shoichi meant as a place to talk about art and against the war. Stained-glass windows, a white ceiling, red velvet chairs and a copy of the Mona Lisa set the tone. The north half, remodelled in 1941 to a design by Bencivenni, an Italian studying at Kyoto University, was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2003.
