The Kamo River runs about 27 km through Kyoto, and between the Sanjo and Shijo bridges the low Pontocho houses on the west bank face the water. From 1 May to 15 October restaurants on the west bank between Nijo and Gojo build noryo-yuka dining platforms out on the riverbank, a custom said to go back to the Momoyama period.

Insider tip

Kyoto Prefecture's Kamo River ordinance bans rockets, aerial fireworks and firecrackers on the river banks through the city. The water can rise fast in a downpour, so move away from the river as soon as it starts to rise.

22. Pontocho and the Kamo River. Pontocho is a lane about 500 m long between the river and the Takase canal. From 1 May to 15 October, restaurants on the west bank build noryo-yuka dining platforms out on the riverbank, though each sets its own season. Or sit on the bank between the Sanjo and Shijo bridges.

Kawaramachi is the shopping streets round the Shijo-Kawaramachi crossing, with the Teramachi and Shinkyogoku Arcades running north, Nishiki Market running west and Pontocho squeezed in between the Takase canal and the Kamo River. You'll come here to eat, and if you sleep here you won't need a train to get back. Bar K6 on Kiyamachi pours until 2:00.
