Rokusei has cooked Kyoto cuisine since 1899 and started its teoke bento in 1966, seasonal dishes packed into a wooden pail lacquered on the inside. In 1977 it moved to its spot on the north bank of the canal, just west of Heian Shrine.
Insider tip
The teoke bento is ¥4,000 at lunch, tax and service included. Dinner is by reservation only, and it's closed on Mondays. Its soufflé cafe, Satei, opens 14:00 to 17:00 without bookings, and you go in from the canal side.

A Heian court demon-expelling rite at 14:00, then the demons come back through the Otenmon gate to dance, beans are thrown, and about 40,000 prayer sticks go on a bonfire. A free Okura school kyogen play opens the afternoon at 12:00.

About 16,000 runners set off from Takebishi Stadium at 9:00 and finish in front of Heian Jingu, passing near seven World Heritage sites on the way, Kinkaku-ji, Kamigamo and Ginkaku-ji among them. Roads along the course close for hours, so plan your sightseeing around it.

The shrine's main festival on 15 April, and on the 16th a stage in front of the Daigokuden hall has kagura, bugaku court dance and dances by geiko and maiko. Free to watch.

Art museums, Meiji gardens and Nanzen-ji along the Lake Biwa Canal
Okazaki is Kyoto's museum quarter. Two art museums sit either side of the approach to Heian Shrine, by its giant torii, and the zoo, a crafts museum and ROHM Theatre Kyoto are a few minutes away round Okazaki Park. Follow the Lake Biwa Canal east and you're at Nanzen-ji, with Eikan-do and Murin-an a short walk from its gate.
