ROHM Theatre Kyoto is the old Kyoto Kaikan, a modernist hall by Kunio Maekawa that opened in 1960, rebuilt and reopened under its new name in 2016. It holds a 2,000-seat main hall, a 700-seat South Hall and a black-box North Hall, round a courtyard called ROHM Square.
Insider tip
You don't need a ticket to look round the courtyard or the Kyoto Okazaki Tsutaya bookshop, which opens 10:00 to 20:00 with a Starbucks running 8:00 to 22:00. Kyoto Modern Terrace, the cafe and restaurant upstairs, serves until 22:00.

More than 100 dealers in antiques and secondhand goods set up in Okazaki Park in front of Heian Shrine. Dates move from month to month and are often weekdays, and rain or storms cancel it, with the call posted the afternoon before.

A market of makers' own crafts and snacks in Okazaki Park, about once a month on dates the organiser posts, often on a weekday. In 2026 there was none in September or October, and the August one ran from 16:00 to 20:00.

Art museums, Meiji gardens and Nanzen-ji along the Lake Biwa Canal
Okazaki is Kyoto's museum quarter. Two art museums sit either side of the approach to Heian Shrine, by its giant torii, and the zoo, a crafts museum and ROHM Theatre Kyoto are a few minutes away round Okazaki Park. Follow the Lake Biwa Canal east and you're at Nanzen-ji, with Eikan-do and Murin-an a short walk from its gate.
