Yamamoto Menzou is a small udon shop near Heian Shrine, with a ten-seat counter and two tables. The red Menzou Special is a spicy bowl with burdock tempura, fried mochi and egg (you choose the heat), and the beef and burdock tsukemen comes with a hot dipping broth.

Book online up to three days ahead for slots from 9:45 to 10:45 and from 14:00, or phone from 9:00 on the day for the 11:00 to 13:45 slots. Booking needs a card, but you pay in cash at the shop. It's closed on Thursdays and stops serving when the noodles run out.

On seven autumn days the zoo stays open until 20:00 and is lit after dark, with keeper talks at 17:30, 18:00 and 18:30 and an outdoor film at 19:00 from 12 Oct. Entry is the usual ¥750, free for junior high school students and younger, and gorillas, monkeys and some birds aren't on show at night.
