Daiyasu has made Kyoto pickles since 1902 and has kept its main shop in Okazaki, east of Heian Shrine, since 1930. Its senmaizuke, Shogoin turnip shaved 2.6 mm thin and cured with Hokkaido kelp, has gone to the Imperial court every year since 1963.
Insider tip
Senmaizuke is sold from September to April, and a 110 g pack is ¥864. The shop is open every day. A one-hour nukazuke class, where you make a rice-bran pickling bed to take home, costs ¥1,650.

For one day, Kyoto restaurants including Mishima-tei, Moritaya and Ginkakuji Onishi cook dishes from Kyoto beef in the park in front of Heian Shrine, and packs of the beef sell at ¥1,000, ¥2,000 and ¥3,000. Entry's free.

Kyoto City Zoo Autumn Night Opening

On seven autumn days the zoo stays open until 20:00 and is lit after dark, with keeper talks at 17:30, 18:00 and 18:30 and an outdoor film at 19:00 from 12 Oct. Entry is the usual ¥750, free for junior high school students and younger, and gorillas, monkeys and some birds aren't on show at night.

The biggest retrospective yet of the Kyoto painter best known for his animals, about 100 works with some never shown before, and the museum's first show of his work since 1987. His 1912 screen Kangetsu, a fox in the snow under a winter moon, stays on show for the whole run.

Art museums, Meiji gardens and Nanzen-ji along the Lake Biwa Canal
Okazaki is Kyoto's museum quarter. Two art museums sit either side of the approach to Heian Shrine, by its giant torii, and the zoo, a crafts museum and ROHM Theatre Kyoto are a few minutes away round Okazaki Park. Follow the Lake Biwa Canal east and you're at Nanzen-ji, with Eikan-do and Murin-an a short walk from its gate.
