Kyoto Nama Chocolat is a cafe for its own soft ganache chocolates, set in a machiya on a quiet residential street near Heian Shrine. There are two connected tatami rooms and a veranda, 16 seats in all, and no music, just the wind and the leaves.

On seven autumn days the zoo stays open until 20:00 and is lit after dark, with keeper talks at 17:30, 18:00 and 18:30 and an outdoor film at 19:00 from 12 Oct. Entry is the usual ¥750, free for junior high school students and younger, and gorillas, monkeys and some birds aren't on show at night.

Noh performed by firelight at Heian Shrine on the evenings of 1 and 2 June. In rain it moves indoors to the main hall of ROHM Theatre Kyoto, as the second night did in 2026, and the shrine garden stops taking visitors at 17:20 on both days.

Wind chimes hang from the Hashidono, the roofed bridge over the pond in Heian Shrine's garden, and you can write a wish on a strip for ¥300, free on 7 July and 19 August if you've paid for the garden. Garden entry is ¥600.

For one day, Kyoto restaurants including Mishima-tei, Moritaya and Ginkakuji Onishi cook dishes from Kyoto beef in the park in front of Heian Shrine, and packs of the beef sell at ¥1,000, ¥2,000 and ¥3,000. Entry's free.
