Kyoto's city art museum opened in 1933, and its main building is the oldest public art museum building still standing in Japan. A 2020 renovation tucked a glass-fronted entrance under the front plaza and added Higashiyama Cube, a wing for contemporary shows, while the Collection Room shows Kyoto school painting.
Insider tip
The Collection Room is ¥730, and special exhibitions are priced on their own. Some shows need a timed ticket booked ahead. Walk straight through the old central hall to the east entrance and the Japanese garden facing the Higashiyama hills.
