MoMAK is the national museum of 20th-century art and crafts, with a lean toward Kyoto and Kansai artists such as the Kyoto school of Japanese-style painting. Fumihiko Maki designed its granite-gridded building, which opened in 1986, and the collection holds 425 works by the potter Kawai Kanjiro.

The Collection Gallery costs ¥1,000 and changes about five times a year. Special exhibitions cost more and include the Collection Gallery. On Fridays it stays open until 20:00.

About 350 pieces trace contemporary jewellery in postwar Japan, from the Japan Jewellery Designers Association's founding in 1964 to artists working now, including works from Germany shown here for the first time in about 50 years. It's closed on Mondays (open 23 Nov and 11 Jan), 24 Nov, 12 Jan and from 29 Dec to 3 Jan.

Bonsai and suiseki viewing stones sent in by growers from all over Japan fill Miyako Messe for the 46th Taikan-ten. Primary school children and younger get in free, and the sales corner shuts at 15:00 on the last day.

The biggest retrospective yet of the Kyoto painter best known for his animals, about 100 works with some never shown before, and the museum's first show of his work since 1987. His 1912 screen Kangetsu, a fox in the snow under a winter moon, stays on show for the whole run.

The first retrospective in 40 years of Yamaga Seika, who designed, chose the thread and wove his own tapestries, from Gion Matsuri float hangings to wall pieces showing locomotives, rockets and Tokyo Tower. It's closed on Mondays unless they're holidays.

Art museums, Meiji gardens and Nanzen-ji along the Lake Biwa Canal
Okazaki is Kyoto's museum quarter. Two art museums sit either side of the approach to Heian Shrine, by its giant torii, and the zoo, a crafts museum and ROHM Theatre Kyoto are a few minutes away round Okazaki Park. Follow the Lake Biwa Canal east and you're at Nanzen-ji, with Eikan-do and Murin-an a short walk from its gate.
