Insider tip

Staff speak English, and there's tax-free shopping and overseas shipping. Its painting workshops, a clay bell for ¥2,420 or a Kyoto folding fan for ¥3,850, take at most four people a session and run only on set dates, so check the site and book online. It closes over the New Year and on some extra days in January and February.
