Fujinomori Shrine dates back about 1,800 years by its own account, and it's the shrine of luck in contests and guardian of horses. It calls itself the birthplace of the 5 May iris festival, and that day, during the Fujinomori Festival (1 to 5 May), riders perform kakeuma stunts on the south approach at 13:00 and 15:00.
Insider tip
Two hydrangea gardens with about 3,500 plants open in June for the Ajisai Matsuri. The stone walls at the south and west entrances came from Fushimi Castle, and some stones still carry the marks of the lords who supplied them. The treasure hall shows a suit of armour that's an Important Cultural Property and horse toys from all over Japan.
