Nezameya has fed pilgrims on the Fushimi Inari approach for 500 years, by its own count. The shop says Toyotomi Hideyoshi named it after stopping for tea here early one morning, when nowhere else was open. The menu runs to inari-zushi, saba-zushi, kitsune udon, eel and grilled quail.
Insider tip
Inari-zushi is ¥1,050 for seven pieces, kitsune udon ¥800 and the eel bowl set ¥2,400. Everyone has to order at least one dish, and you can't bring in food or drinks from elsewhere. It closes when the food runs out, so don't leave it late.
What the guides say about Nezameya
A stone at the west end of Demachi Bridge marks the end of the Saba Kaido, the old mackerel road. Gion Izuju has made Kyoto-style sushi at the foot of Yasaka Shrine's stone steps since the end of the Meiji era. Its saba-zushi is Tsushima mackerel pressed on rice and wrapped in kombu, ¥2,820 for six pieces before tax, and almost everything can be taken away. Nezameya, on the Fushimi Inari approach, does saba-zushi too, plus inari-zushi at ¥1,050 for seven and kitsune udon for ¥800.
