Insider tip

Closed Thursdays. A regular bowl is ¥980 and the special ramen ¥1,230. It takes cards, e-money and QR payments. It's 4 minutes on foot from JR Kyoto Station, so it suits an early train or a late arrival.

Two ramen shops a few steps apart, just east of Kyoto Station, cover almost any arrival. Honke Daiichi Asahi serves a clear soy broth with Kujo green onions from 6:00 until 1:00, ¥980 a bowl, and it's closed on Thursdays. Shinpuku Saikan started as a street stall in 1938, and its soy broth's so dark it surprises first-timers. A regular bowl's ¥950, cash only.

19. Ramen by the station. Honke Daiichi Asahi opens at 6:00 and shuts at 1:00 (closed Thursdays, ¥980 a bowl). Nearby, Shinpuku Saikan has a soy broth so dark it surprises first-timers, cash only. Kyoto Ramen Koji puts ten shops on the station's 10th floor.

You won't be short of things to do on your doorstep either. Higashi Hongan-ji is 7 minutes north on foot and free, and Honke Daiichi Asahi serves ramen from 6:00. The catch is the crowd. Kyoto City's tourism site even tells visitors to avoid getting off at JR Kyoto Station when they can.

After dark, 15,000 LEDs light the station's 171-step staircase.
