Shinpuku Saikan started as a street stall in 1938 and still serves chuka soba in a soy broth so dark it surprises first-timers. It's a few minutes east of Kyoto Station, a few steps from Honke Daiichi Asahi.

Insider tip

A regular bowl is ¥950. It's cash only, no cards or PayPay. It closes on some Wednesdays and on a few days each month that it posts on its website. The menu has fried rice (yakimeshi) too.

19. Ramen by the station. Honke Daiichi Asahi opens at 6:00 and shuts at 1:00 (closed Thursdays, ¥980 a bowl). Nearby, Shinpuku Saikan has a soy broth so dark it surprises first-timers, cash only. Kyoto Ramen Koji puts ten shops on the station's 10th floor.

Two ramen shops a few steps apart, just east of Kyoto Station, cover almost any arrival. Honke Daiichi Asahi serves a clear soy broth with Kujo green onions from 6:00 until 1:00, ¥980 a bowl, and it's closed on Thursdays. Shinpuku Saikan started as a street stall in 1938, and its soy broth's so dark it surprises first-timers. A regular bowl's ¥950, cash only.

In its fifth year about 150 modern buildings take part, and on 31 Oct and 1 Nov and on 7 and 8 Nov a passport lets you walk into 61 that are usually closed or hard to visit, from houses, banks, schools and churches to a National Treasure. From 26 Oct a half pass is ¥3,000 and a full pass ¥5,000, sold online or for cash at the Kyoto General Tourist Information Center in Kyoto Station.

NAKED lights Higashi Honganji and its detached garden Shosei-en for an evening walk through five scenes. Adult tickets are ¥2,100 Monday to Thursday and ¥2,300 Friday to Sunday and on holidays (¥200 less in advance), and from 6 to 8 Nov and on 25 Nov only Shosei-en is open.

Followers from all over Japan line up across the tatami of the Founder's and Amida halls, beat it with split bamboo and fan the dust out with paper fans about 2 m across. Then the head of the temple traces the character for 'long life' on a paper screen with a bamboo pole.
