Fushimi Sake District
Fushimi, Kyoto
Fushimi's name was once written with the character for water, thanks to its groundwater, and about 20 breweries still make sake here. Around Gekkeikan's storehouses the Horikawa canal, once the outer moat of Fushimi Castle, runs between willows and cherry trees.
Insider tip
From late March to early December, Jikkokubune boats take you along the canal on a round trip of about 50 minutes that stops at the Misu lock gate museum. Walking round is free, and the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, Kizakura Kappa Country and Torisei are all within a few minutes of each other.
