A long-run Naruto ninja show with no dialogue, so you don't need any Japanese: live action, acrobatics, aerial work and projection mapping, using every bit of stage machinery in Kyoto's old kabuki theatre. It follows Naruto's boyhood story in the Hidden Leaf Village and runs from February to June.

From 1 May the restaurants along the river in Kiyamachi, Pontocho and Saiseki serve on outdoor terraces looking across the Kamogawa to the Higashiyama hills, until 15 October. Some stop at the end of September, and breakfast, lunch and hours vary by restaurant.

From May the inns and restaurants of Kibune set platforms just above the Kibune River, so you eat Kyoto cooking in the cool air of the valley with the stream running under you. About 15 places take part, and dates and hours vary by restaurant.

Takigi Noh at Heian Shrine

Noh performed by firelight at Heian Shrine on the evenings of 1 and 2 June. In rain it moves indoors to the main hall of ROHM Theatre Kyoto, as the second night did in 2026, and the shrine garden stops taking visitors at 17:20 on both days.

Kifune Shrine's annual festival and the most important rite of its year. After the 11:00 ceremony the shrine's deity is carried in a mikoshi through Kibune village to pray for the people who live there.

Rice-planting Festival at Fushimi Inari

On the second Saturday of June, Urasenke serves tea in the Hashidono and Hosodono halls, court dance in twelve-layer robes, gagaku and koto are performed in the Shinpuku-den, and old shops tied to the shrine hold an evening market by the Romon gate. Fireflies glow along the Semi stream in the forest, and the tea seats are for members of the Tadasu no Mori Foundation.

Bamboo-cutting Ceremony at Kurama-dera

竹伐り会式(鞍馬寺)

Station Kurama (Eizan Railway)

Monks dressed as warrior monks split into Omi and Tanba teams and race to hack through green bamboo poles that stand in for great serpents, and the race is read as a forecast of the harvest. The rite recalls a Heian-period monk who killed a serpent here, and it's said to be a thousand years old.

On the 21st of every month, Kukai's memorial day, about 1,200 to 1,300 stalls fill To-ji's grounds with antiques, old kimono and secondhand odds and ends, and about 200,000 people come. Most stallholders are dealers with shops elsewhere, it goes ahead in the rain, and stalls open from about 5:00, so come early if you're hunting for something.

The 25th is Kitano Tenmangu's monthly fair day, and stalls line the approach all day. From sunset the shrine lights its 350 stone and 250 hanging lanterns, and 25 January and 25 December are the busiest of the year, with about a thousand stalls.
