Toyokuni Shrine enshrines Toyotomi Hideyoshi and was rebuilt in 1880 on the site of Hoko-ji's Great Buddha Hall, which was the largest building in Japan in its day. The National Treasure Karamon gate in front is said to come from Fushimi Castle. Next door hangs Hoko-ji's bell of 1614, whose inscription Tokugawa Ieyasu used as a pretext to turn on the Toyotomi.
Insider tip
The grounds and the gate are free. The treasure hall is ¥500 and has Kano Naizen's folding screens of the shrine's great festival and things said to be Hideyoshi's, like a pillow shaped as a baku, the beast that eats nightmares. A market, the Hokoku-san Omoshiro-ichi, sets up on the 8th, 18th and 28th unless it rains.
