Toraya, the wagashi maker founded in Kyoto in the late Muromachi period, has kept a shop here since before 1628, back when it supplied the palace. Its tea room, a short way west along Ichijo-dori, looks onto a garden with a small Inari shrine and an Edo-period storehouse, and you can read any of its 600 books on wagashi and Japanese culture.
