Doshisha grew from the English school Niijima Jo opened in 1875, and its campus across Imadegawa-dori from the palace keeps a row of Meiji-era Western-style buildings, five of them Important Cultural Properties, including the 1886 chapel and the 1890 Harris Science Hall. The Harris hall is now a free gallery on Niijima and the school's history.
