Tenzan no Yu is a hot spring complex three minutes' walk from Arisugawa on the Randen tram, on a natural spring that rises in Sagano. The Kinkaku no Yu outdoor bath uses the spring water untouched, and it's rich enough in iron to turn brown in the air, while the Ginkaku no Yu has the iron taken out. Both sides have saunas with aufguss sessions every two hours from 1pm to 11pm, and there's a restaurant and a tatami lounge for afterwards.
Insider tip
Entry is ¥1,200 on weekdays and ¥1,300 at weekends and on holidays, or ¥550 for children from 4 to the end of primary school. Shampoo, conditioner and body soap are free, and a towel set rents for ¥250. No one with a tattoo can come in, even covered up, and that includes tattoo stickers and body paint. It's closed on the third Monday of the month.
