Nonomiya is a small shrine on the bamboo path, on the site where imperial princesses once stayed before going to serve at the Grand Shrine of Ise, and it turns up in The Tale of Genji. Its black torii is sawtooth oak with the bark left on, the oldest style of torii in Japan, set in a low brushwood fence.
Insider tip
People come to pray for a good match and for children, at Nonomiya Daikokuten and Shirafuku Inari. Rub the turtle stone while you make your wish. It's where the bamboo path starts, a short walk east of Tenryu-ji's north gate.
