The manga museum fills an early Showa school building, the former Tatsuike Elementary School, with about 50,000 manga on 200 metres of open shelves. You can take any of them down and read. Shonen titles are on the first floor, shojo on the second and seinen on the third, and there's a corner of translated manga from around the world.

What the guides say about Kyoto International Manga Museum
When it rains, the Kyoto International Manga Museum lets you take any of about 50,000 manga off its shelves and read (¥1,200). At the Kyoto Railway Museum a working steam engine pulls a coach 1 km out and back. Both are closed on most Wednesdays. See rainy day Kyoto and Kyoto with kids.

Kyoto's old bank corner, with kimono streets one block back
Shijo-Karasuma is the crossing where the subway meets the Hankyu line from Osaka, and by 1915 three of the big banks stood on it. It doesn't look much like the Kyoto on the posters. Walk one block west, though, and you're on Muromachi-dori, the old kimono wholesalers' street, near the lanes where the Gion Matsuri floats are built every July.
Shijo-Karasuma has 16 places on the Roam Kyoto map: 4 shops, 3 shrines and temples, 3 cafes, 3 museums, 1 restaurant, 1 bar and 1 neighbourhood. Read the Shijo-Karasuma guide.
