Taizo-in is one of the oldest of Myoshin-ji's subtemples, founded around 1404, and it has two very different gardens. The dry Motonobu garden was laid out by the painter Kano Motonobu, while the Yoko-en is a pond garden you walk around. Near the abbot's hall hangs a copy of Josetsu's Hyonen-zu, a National Treasure the temple calls the oldest ink painting in Japan.
Insider tip
Entry is ¥700 (high school students included) and ¥400 for primary and junior high students. In the Daikyu-an tea seat in the garden, matcha comes with Kore Nanzo, a gourd-and-catfish sweet the temple serves nowhere else, for ¥900. Allow 20 to 30 minutes. It's closed all day on 21 October 2026.
