Saga-Toriimoto grew up as both the gateway town for pilgrims heading to Atago Shrine and a farming village, and the road still shows both. Townhouses with mushiko windows stand next to thatched farmhouses as it climbs from Adashino Nenbutsu-ji to Atago's first torii.
Insider tip
Look in at the free preservation centre near the torii, an early Meiji townhouse with a model of the street as it looked in the early Showa years. It's closed on Mondays. Kyoto Bus stops at Toriimoto, 3 minutes away, or it's about 30 minutes on foot from Togetsukyo by way of Rakushisha.
