Nara
Nara, Kyoto
Nara's big draw is Todai-ji and its bronze Buddha, almost 15 m tall, first dedicated in 752, and its head has been recast twice since. The hall around it dates from 1709 and is only about 60 percent as wide as the original, yet it's still one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Deer wander the grounds, and they're a protected natural monument.
