Rokusonno Shrine was built in front of the grave of Minamoto no Tsunemoto, a grandson of Emperor Seiwa whose descendants include Minamoto no Yoritomo and the Ashikaga and Tokugawa clans. His son Mitsunaka built the first shrine here in the mid-Heian period, and the present halls went up again under the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tsunayoshi.
Insider tip
Look for the peony crest, a nod to Tsunemoto's love of peonies. Beside the pond, a Benzaiten shrine stands over the well whose water is said to have bathed the newborn Mitsunaka, and its image is shown on 13 June. The yearly festival falls on Sports Day in October. It's 13 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station.
