Ichiwa sells one thing, aburi-mochi. Small pieces of rice cake go onto bamboo skewers, get toasted over charcoal and come dipped in white miso sauce, at a teahouse on the stone path outside Imamiya Shrine's east gate.
Insider tip
You'll pay ¥600 a serving. Kazariya, right across the path, sells the same sweet at the same price. Both close on Wednesdays (Thursday instead when the 1st, the 15th or a holiday falls on a Wednesday) and at the end of the year.
What the guides say about Ichiwa
Round Kitano Tenmangu, Awamochi Sawaya pounds millet cakes through the day, wrapped in red bean paste or rolled in kinako, so yours will likely still be warm. Eat them there, as they don't keep. Outside Imamiya Shrine's east gate, Ichiwa toasts aburi-mochi over charcoal and dips it in white miso sauce for ¥600 a serving.
