Hikone Castle's keep is one of five in Japan listed as a National Treasure, with Himeji, Matsumoto, Inuyama and Matsue. Work started in 1604 and took about 20 years, and the stone walls, turrets and moats inside the middle moat survive in very good shape. The ticket also gets you into Genkyu-en, the garden of the lords' lower residence.
Insider tip
The JR Special Rapid from Kyoto takes about 50 minutes. Entry is ¥1,000 and includes Genkyu-en. The keep sits on a hill about 130 m above sea level, with steep stone steps and no lifts, and you take your shoes off inside.
