Jittoku has put on live music since 1973 in a converted sake storehouse on Omiya-dori, north of Nijo Castle, with room for 80 to 100 people. It's mostly rock and jazz, plus an open-mic acoustic night, mostly on Mondays, and rakugo at noon on the first Sunday of the month.

Insider tip

Tickets run from about ¥1,000 to ¥4,000, plus a drink or food order, and the open-mic nights are free. Shows usually start at 18:30 or 19:00. The monthly schedule on the website lists the closed days, and you can reserve there too.

24. A small bar. Sake Bar Yoramu has eight or nine seats and pours sake by the 60 ml glass, Wednesday to Saturday from 18:00. Shinme, on Senbon-dori since 1934, is said to be Kyoto's oldest izakaya. For live music, Coffee House Jittoku has put on shows in an old sake storehouse since 1973.

Nijo Castle's autumn festival, with a Kyoto specialty goods fair and other events by day, and an evening light-up and art show in the grounds. In 2026 the night ticket was ¥2,000 Monday to Thursday and ¥2,400 Friday to Sunday, separate from day entry, and free for junior high students and under.

For the 400th anniversary of the Kan'ei imperial visit, the castle's night light-up is an art show by NAKED built around Tokugawa Masako and Kan'ei-era design, with maples, ginkgo and cherry trees lit along the way. Tickets are ¥2,000 Monday to Thursday and ¥2,400 Friday to Sunday and on holidays (¥400 less if bought by 22 Oct), and children up to junior high school get in free.

Nijo Castle Cherry Blossom Festival

About 300 cherry trees of 50 kinds flower in turn through the festival. By day there's a stamp rally and a fair of Kyoto products, and the evening light-up runs on its own ticket.

Cherry Festival at the Old Kyoto Prefectural Office

Seven cherries fill the courtyard of the old prefectural office, an Important Cultural Property, among them a grandchild of Maruyama Park's first weeping cherry and the rare Katamori-zakura. It's lit up in the evenings for the first week.
