Amanohashidate
Amanohashidate, Kyoto
Amanohashidate is a 3.6 km sandbar in Miyazu Bay on the Sea of Japan, covered in about 5,400 pine trees. It's one of Japan's Three Views, with Matsushima and Miyajima. You can walk it in about 50 minutes or cycle it in 20, and from Kasamatsu Park on the north shore you're meant to look at it upside down, bent over and peering between your legs (mata-nozoki started here).
